Boy Choir - USA - founded in the 1930s
The Albuquerque Boy Choir originated as the Chester
T. French Boys' Choir in the 1930s, singing at the First Methodist
Church in Albuquerque under the direction of George Geake. Currently,
the choir is a non-profit organization that gives boys a chance to grow
through musical learning, self-discipline, performance demeanor and
working together for the common joy of singing.
The
choir has performed with the American Boychoir, Chicago Children's
Choir, Colorado Springs Childrens Chorale, Hawaii Youth Opera Chorus,
New Mexico Symphony Orchestra, Phoenix Boys Choir, Santa Fe Opera,
Tucson Arizona Boys Chorus and others.
The choir
has sung on TV and radio--including live, nationwide radio broadcasts
in the early days of NBC Radio--from the depths of Carlsbad Caverns and
the cliffs overlooking Grand Canyon. In June of 1995, they sang for
(and met) President Bill Clinton during services at Foundry Methodist
in Washington, DC. In June of 1999, they returned to DC to sing in the
Naval Academy Chapel.
In May, 1998, the Concert
Choir received "Outstanding" Ratings (Best of Show) for both its
Classical and Show Choir performances at the Greater Southwest Music
Festival in Amarillo, Texas. In June of that year, the Choristers sang
in Grace Cathedral, San Francisco, and the Concert Choir sang in
Gloucester Cathedral, St. James Church and Windsor Parish Church, all
in England. The Concert Choir accepted an invitation (one of only a
dozen US boy choirs) to be a featured group in the world-renowned
AmericaFest, an international singing festival for men and boys, held
in June, 2000. Links
