You
may have wondered from where the name Rio de Janeiro (January River)
originated. The place was discovered in January and was thought to be a
large river but it turned out to be a large bay now known as the
Guanabara Bay. On one side is Rio de Janeiro and on the other Niteroi.
The Pequeno Cantores da Guanabara were a popular boys choir in Brazil
in the mid sixties. Under the directorship of Father João
Bedeschi and Carlos Monteiro de Souza they
recorded a number of albums on the Philips label and appeared on
television and radio. The members came from a Salesian School
'São Francisco de Sales' in Riachuelo, RJ. They starred in
the film 'Em Busca do Tesouro' directed by Carlos A.S. Barros. The
sambista Cláudio Jorge was a member of the choir for a short
while. Their repertoire was popular songs and Christmas Carols. The
choir is no longer in existence.
