Sir George Thalben-Ball
Sir George Thalben-Ball was born on the 18th of June 1896 in
Australia, although he and his family moved back to England a few years
later. His talent for music and in particular the organ was noticed at an
early age and he became a Fellow of the Royal College of Organists when he
was 16. In 1919 he was appointed organist of the Temple Church. He had an
interest in technology and the development of recording techniques
and it was this interest that brought him to the attention of recording
companies and the BBC. As well as providing playing the organ for the
famous recordings by Ernest Lough and the other boy sopranos he himself
made some excellent organ music recordings and gave many recitals. He was
also a talented composer and wrote two collections of Introits. He
was awarded an Honorary Degree in Music in 1935 by the Archbishop of
Canterbury and was knighted in 1982 when he left the choir. He died in
1987.
